Concrete Surface preparation. PCD and Carbide tools (graphite)

To begin with, PCD carbide tool is used on grinding machines to remove a thin layer of polymer, polymer adhesive. PCD segments are soldered onto a metal body using a special solder. The quality and cost of such tools depend not only on the country of the supplier and the brand. The manufacturer pays special attention to the quality of carbide, as well as the quality of brazing of carbide segments on the body.

During the course of work, the PCD segments often become extremely hot. This is because the carbide segment is actually working in close contact with the concrete surface. In addition to overheating, it is also very difficult to exclude shock loads on the segments. Especially when the floor is not even, when there is a release joint under the polymer.

It is also crucial to correctly position the segments on the grinder, observing the correct rotation, so that the segment performs the function of stripping. The direction of rotation of the segment is extremely important. Therefore, for grinding machines where the heads rotate clockwise, Superabrasive paints the PCD segments in black. Those PCD segments that are placed on the heads rotating counterclockwise have blue color.

In case there is a task to sand and polish surface, after peeling off old glue or polymers, then scratches on the concrete from the work of PCD segments may become a problem.

Varnish is often applied to concrete floors (curing). This is the cheapest solution for drying moisture on concrete. However, varnish can interfere with our grinding with metal diamond segments. PCD segments are not extremely suitable for removing varnish because they will scratch the concrete surface.

The graphite segment will help us when peeling very thin polymers and paints. This is a new solution for the European market. However, in the USA Superabrasive has been successfully marketing graphite segments for several years. It is possible to break the top layer, using graphite segments, with virtually no scratches, and then to grind the floor with a regular diamond metal segment on very thin polymers, painted concrete floors or lacquered surfaces.
